Kurt Boutilier takes you through his technique of modeling an organic character. This includes every single step from the basics of setting up image-planes, modeling the complete character to final detailing and lighting the character.
Of course the DVD comes with the appropriate files like the textures for the image planes etc. The video quality is very good, the sound quality of the DVD is ok - not as professional like most Alias DVDs but for sure good enough to understand everything. Some audio dropouts occured but that also might be problem of the dvd-player. You never know in these days.
The DVD is splitted into the following sections:
• Introduction
• Modeling Parts A to P
• Lighting
After a short introduction Kurt starts right away setting up the image-planes, putting them in layers and beginning the process of modeling the basic shape of the head. The modeling process is splitted into 16 parts, categorized from A to P.
In contrast to some other DVDs, where all lessons are normaly "perfectly" prepared and presented more theoretical like in school, this DVD presents more "rough" the complete process of modeling the character. This means, you really "sit" besides Kurt watching him modeling, doing Undos after small mistakes etc.. It´s always a good practise watching someone modeling a complex organic form, learning his tricks, looking at his marking-menus and the way he uses the modeling-tools. This also inludes the fact, that - again in contrast to most other DVDs - there are parts where almost nothing is said, for example when Kurt is refining something. But this makes it even more interesting, since you get a very personal in-depth look, what problems can occur, how to solve them and how to refine the character step by step. Of course Kurt uses all techniques, including NURBS, polygons and SubD.
In the last part on the DVD Kurt shows you how to set up a typical three-point lighting for doing some testrenderings.
Conclusion:
This DVD gives you an in-depth look of organic modeling. Lean back and watch Kurt modeling his chracter from the very first step to final detailing. Learn his way of refining the character, at what point he uses what tool and his efficient way of using NURBS, Polygons and Subd.
