Digital Character Animation 2: Essential Techniques |

In 1996, George Maestri wrote what is now the benchmark for computer character animation books, Digital Character Animation. It quickly became a bestseller, because it addressed many important issues for people using computers for character animation.
But like many books of its type, it covered an enormous amount of territory without going into the depth that some sections deserved. With the publication of Digital Character Animation 2 Volume 1 - Essential Techniques, Maestri has been able to restructure much of the original content, while going into more detail than the first edition. For example, building skeletons has been broken out into a whole separate chapter, and the chapter on posing characters has almost doubled in length.

George Maestri broke new ground with his first book, Digital Character Animation 2: Essential Techniques, which quickly became a fixture on the recommended reading list of just about every contemporary digital animator. It demonstrated solid methods for building characters and preparing them for animation, and touched on animation itself, all the while staying away from hardware and software specifics. Maestri explained the "why" of doing something. It was up to you to know "how."
The second volume, Digital Character Animation 2: Advanced Techniques, delves deeper into the art of animation itself without losing its digital perspective and yet while still maintaining some distance from hardware platforms and software applications.

Thomas and Johnston, two of Disney's original animators, here give the inside scoop on how the studio created the works that have charmed the world. "The text is ambitious," said LJ's reviewer (LJ 12/15/81). The "authors simultaneously give a history of Disney animation and explain the processes involved in clear, nontechnical terms." Along with the splendid text are dozens of color and black-and-white photographs and illustrations. A "magnificent volume" that remains "essential for film collections and a feast for the most casual peruser."

Timing for Animation |

Written by two professional animators, this text for students and professionals describes the principles of timing for hand drawn animation. Their approach is based on the idea that timing in animation is ultimately based on the laws of movement in nature. A sampling of topics includes rotating objects, timing an oscillating movement, and synchronizing animation to speech. Numerous drawn examples in b&w accompany the text.
John Lasseter
"The principles of timing laid out in this book are move applicable (now) than ever before."
